K-9 Inspection

Detection: Man's best friend is a bed bug's worst nightmare.

For years, dogs have been trained to detect bombs, drugs, explosives and other items. Because of their extremely sensitive noses, dogs can be trained to detect Bed Bugs and are nearly 99% accurate.

ABC's Bed Bug K-9 can detect bed bugs in the smallest cracks and crevices, making their inspection more thorough and accurate. More accurate detection means that if there is bed bug activity present, the dogs will alert to it and control measures can begin. Unlike even the most skilled pest management specialist, our dogs are able to quickly detect bed bugs at every stage of development.

How Do K-9 Inspections Work?

  • ABC's K-9 handler will check in with your designated contact person. The property will provide a list of rooms that are ready for inspection and preferably, a designated individual to accompany the handler and our K-9. This person (if possible a housekeeping manager or supervisor) should be available to open rooms and arrange for any assistance the handler may need during the inspection.

  • The handler and K-9 will complete a thorough inspection of the entire room in approximately 2-3 minutes. Special attention will be given to areas where bed bugs are most likely to be found including: Behind bed headboard, mattress, box spring, and bed frame, night stand(s) including lamp(s), clock, telephone, carpet edges and baseboards especially near bed(s)
  • If the K-9 detects through scent that bed bugs are present, the dog will alert by sitting and 'pointing' (not barking).
  • Once the K-9 alerts, the room should be taken out of service immediately and surrounding rooms, should be made available to determine if the infestation has spread beyond the identified room.
  • If an infestation is discovered and it is necessary for the handler and K-9 to spend extra time (beyond the usual 2-3 minute inspection) identifying the location of the infestation, this will impact ABC's ability to inspect the total number of rooms. Additional service may be scheduled at this time, or the uninspected rooms may be placed on the room list for the next regular bed bug K-9 inspection service.
  • Any positive alerts for bed bugs will be thoroughly documented by the K-9 handler.
  • Once the bed bug K-9 inspection service is complete, ABC will review the results with the designated contact person.
  • For any positive alerts, ABC's bed bug K-9 handler will coordinate the targeted inspection and treatment strategy with your ABC Inspector to provide the fastest, most effective response to protect your guests and brand from additional risk.
