Eat Your Way Through the Seasons With Homegrown Produce

What’s easiest to grow and when to eat it

Strawberries are one of the easiest and tastiest choices for home gardeningSick of the produce selection at the supermarket? Grow your own fresh fruits and veggies this year and enjoy fresh, delicious food all season long.

Zucchini

Also called courgettes, zucchini are a variety of summer squash that taste delicious in soups, salads, curries and baked goods. They can be grown in the garden or in a pot on your porch. Each plant produces a large amount of zucchini, so you don’t need very many to get a good crop. The only trouble you might have with these little green powerhouses is figuring out what to do with all of them once they’re fully grown. Expect to start harvesting in June and not stop until September.

Green Beans

Another high producer, green beans will grow just about anywhere. There are many varieties, including bush beans, pole beans and broad beans, not all of which are green. You can grow yellow or purple varieties as well. Use them in casseroles, curries, stews and more. May, June and July are the best months for harvesting fresh green beans. Beans are also easy to blanch and freeze to enjoy over the winter.

Lettuce Mix

Lettuce is probably the single easiest vegetable to grow. You can plant it directly in the garden, in pots or in containers just by sticking the seeds in some soil and making sure they stay watered. Choose any kind of mix you like, from mild lettuces to spicy Asian greens. If you harvest lettuce by clipping the leaves off near the base, it should keep producing nearly all year given proper weather conditions.

Strawberries

You can’t beat the flavor of a freshly picked strawberry. They’re easiest to grow if you start them from plants, and they produce faster that way, too. Plant them in pots or in the ground and enjoy ripe berries directly off the plant in March, April and May. Keep in mind that animals also like to eat these little ruby-colored delights, so you might want to place netting over the berry patch to discourage them.
