5 Signs of a Malfunctioning Dishwasher

How to tell if your dishwasher is on the fritz

Like all appliances, dishwashers experience difficulty from time to time. If you encounter any of these common problems, it’s a good idea to have your machine looked at right away.

1. You washed the dishes but they’re not clean

There’s nothing worse than opening up the dishwasher after a cycle only to find that everything inside is still dirty. Though the problem could simply be that you didn’t stack the dishes the right way, it could also be due to a clogged spray arm or filter. The easiest way to figure out the problem is to reload the dishes and run another cycle, making sure to use enough detergent.

2. The floor around the machine is soaking wet

Poor dish stacking can also contribute to leaks, especially if you’re trying to put too much into the dishwasher at once. If your floor becomes one big puddle every time you run a load, check the seal around the door for cracks or worn spots. Look at the pipe connections, too, and make sure that they’re securely fastened.

3. Overfilling or not filling at all

These common dishwasher issues could be due to a multitude of factors. Bad door seals, damaged drain hoses, a faulty float or float switch, and problems with the water inlet valve can all disrupt the proper flow of water. To determine whether you need to call a professional, it’s important to check all of these parts before running another load.

4. You hear odd noises

Strange sounds coming from any appliance should be cause for concern. While some sounds may be attributable to rattling dishes or silverware, others such as humming or thumping could be an indication of a bigger problem with the pump or valves.

5. Down the drain (or not)

Excess or dirty water left in the dishwasher usually means that something is clogged. Take a look at the filters, drain, and strainers to check for any blockages that may be causing problems. Clean everything that needs to be cleaned and keep an eye on the next cycle to make sure the dishwasher drains properly.

Thanks for the information. Having a dishwasher is so convenient, until it has problems like the ones you mentioned. My parents replaced their dishwasher because it wasn’t cleaning the dishes no matter how many times we ran it. I will be sure to watch out for these issues in the dishwasher in my home. That way, I can be sure to get it repaired quickly.

I’ve been struggling with getting my dishes clean. Every time I turn the dishwasher on the dishes come out with food residue on them. My husband and I figured that maybe it was the detergent that we were using. I’m glad that you mentioned it could actually be my dishwasher. I’ll probably have to just call someone and see if it needs repair. Thanks for the insight!
