Houston Bucket List Summer

Temperatures are on the rise in Houston and so is the humidity. That means it’s time to start planning your Houston Summer Bucket List! Looking for a handy list of the top things to do this summer in Houston, Texas? If so, read on for all sorts of summer fun activities, tips and ideas.

Top Things To Do This Summer In Houston

Whether you’re an indoor or outdoor person, new to Houston or a longtime resident, on a budget or feeling flush, single, partnered or parenting…there’s something for everyone!

Museums and Galleries Galore

Houston is home to a thriving art gallery and museum scene, including Moody Gallery and Anya Tish Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Natural Science, and many more. The Museum District alone boasts 19 museums and many of them are free to enter. Enjoy the air conditioning and the educational exhibits and marvel at the beautiful winged creatures at the Science Center’s Cockrell Butterfly Center (pictured above).  Another must-see treasure is the 1940 Air Terminal Museum that is housed in the art-deco Houston Municipal Airport building at Hobby Airport, where Houston’s fascinating aviation history comes alive.

Martian Sunsets and Other Exhibits at Space Center Houston

Ever wanted to take a mission to Mars? The Space Center offers you the chance this summer, along with a myriad of other can’t-miss experiences. You can tour NASA Johnson Space Center by tram, learn what life is like on the International Space Station, touch a real lunar rock, watch actual engineers and astronauts at work and so much more. You can even have lunch with a real astronaut.

Animal Life at the Houston Zoo

Home to over 6,000 species of indigenous and exotic animals, the Houston Zoo is beloved by residents and tourists alike. You can feed the giraffes, check out underwater life in the aquarium and more.

Shows at Miller Outdoor Theatre

Bring a chair or a blanket to this popular venue in Hermann Park and enjoy a free performance. On any given day or evening, the theater might be offering a children’s play or music show, a classical music concert, a dance performance, a classic play or anything in between. With such varied offerings, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Performances at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts

With various show offerings that will appeal to adults and children, the Hobby Center is a great way to beat the heat while enjoying some culture. Summer brings Broadway favorites to the 2,650-seat venue and other performances, including smaller arts groups who bring music, dance, theater, and educational outreach to Zilkha Hall. If you have yet to catch a contemporary dance performance in Houston, you can do so at the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater.

Indoor Golfing for the Whole Family at Topgolf

If it’s too hot or humid out for a round of golf, there is a fun alternative if you live or work in or around Katy, Spring or NASA. On Houston’s steamiest mornings (afternoons, or evenings), try Topgolf, which offers climate-controlled fun for kids and adults. You can even enjoy food and drinks, including adult beverages, delivered by waiters to your hitting bay while you play.

Retail Therapy and Excellent Air-Conditioning at the Galleria

When you’re just too sweaty to contemplate outdoor fun, the Galleria offers plenty of diversions for whiling away the day and deliciously chilled indoor temperatures. Go ice skating, get your nails done, grab a bite to eat, or take your kids to the Little Galleria Play Area to burn off some steam.

Bike Riding, Picnicking, and More in Buffalo Bayou Park

Explore the natural beauty of Buffalo Bayou as you walk, bike, or picnic throughout this 160-acre park. Check out the bats that fly out from the Waugh Drive Bridge every evening, take your four-legged friends for a jaunt at Johnny Steele Dog Park, or enjoy a romantic moment with your sweetheart in Hidalgo Park’s historic gazebo.

Astros Games at Minute Maid Park

What would summer be without taking in an Astros game? ’Stros games are a summer rite of passage, and Minute Maid Park is worth visiting. With its incredible retractable roof that allows for open-air games but can also keep things dry during rainstorms and temperate even in the height of summer, Minute Maid Park offers myriad options for food, beverages, and other concessions, along with plenty of other diversions and delights (Homerun Alley, for example, and the Squeeze Play area for kids).
