Everything You Need to Know About Stink Bugs in Texas

Stink Bugs Texas

More than half of the animals found on Earth are insects. Of the 100,000 species native to the United States, more than 1/3 are found here in Texas. In fact, Texas has more different species of insects than any other state. One insect that is still relatively new to Texas’ list of critters is the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. Although this pest isn’t from here, let’s explore everything you need to know about dealing with stink bugs, Texas-style.

Everything You Need to Know About Stink Bugs in Texas

Originally from Asia, this bug is widespread on the East Coast of the United States but arrived in Texas just a few years ago. And while this bug isn’t known for biting or harming its human neighbors, the stink bug is known for the unpleasant odor it releases when disturbed or crushed.

What do Stink Bugs Look Like?

The stink bug is actually relatively easy to identify. Its grayish, mostly brown color and triangular or shield-like shape enable homeowners to recognize it quickly. Other stink bug species might be green, brown, or grayish. Nymphs, however, often change colors as they develop.

The larva’s appearance is also worth noting. The white or pale green eggs have a similar barrel shape as their grown counterparts and are laid in clusters of about 25 eggs on the underside of leaves. They measure about one millimeter in diameter and only become apparent after the nymphs have emerged. Most eggs appear at the beginning of summer, but females continue to lay eggs through September.

This pest has six legs and antennae and measures about ¾ of an inch in length. The bug’s width and the way its legs extend outward from the sides make it seem more significant than it actually is. And as if that isn’t enough to intimidate you, they also have wings that fold on top of their body while at rest and are excellent fliers. But the good news is that although these bugs can look scary, they aren’t harmful to humans.

What do Stink Bugs Eat?

As we mentioned above, stink bugs don’t threaten humans. They can, however, cause a great deal of damage to your backyard garden. Stink bugs feed on fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other vegetation, often causing farmers large losses of crops like tomatoes, green peppers, and apples. If you find bruising or “scabs” on your fruits, known as the “stink bug effect,” there’s likely a stink bug not too far away.

Some stink bug species are also known to eat other stink bugs and other pests like caterpillars, which can, in some cases, benefit your garden.

Where do Stink Bugs Live?

While stink bugs are primarily outdoor insects, they sometimes find their way inside your home. This usually happens during winter as the bugs seek shelter from the cold. In the summer months, though, they can often be found in large numbers on the sides of buildings and around windows and doors.

Keep windows, doors, and other small entryways sealed off to prevent these insects from entering your home. Other openings, like damaged screens on doors, should be replaced quickly to avoid any intruders.

If you find stink bugs inside your home, remind yourself that they’re more of a nuisance than a threat. They won’t cause damage to your home’s interiorother than your plantsand won’t bite your family or your pets.

One way to rid your home of stink bugs is to vacuum them. Remember, though, your vacuum might smell for some time afterward. Another option is to create a small stink bug trap with a small lamp and tub of soapy water underneath. Stink bugs are attracted to light but can’t swim, so this provides a way to control existing stink bugs without releasing the namesake odor.
