Winter Prep Tips for Your HVAC System

the more prepared your system is, the more comfortable you'll be HVAC ABC HoustonAt ABC Houston, we understand that our friends and neighbors depend on their furnaces, boilers, and heat pumps to get through the winter months. The more prepared your system is, the more comfortable you’ll be. Here are eight steps to prepare your HVAC system for the heating season.

1. Get Reversible Ceiling Fans

During the cooling season, fans help your air conditioners run efficiently by circulating the air that collects near the ceiling. During the heating season, a fan with a reverse setting can do the same for your furnace. For best results, invest in an Energy Star-rated fan.

2. Use a Humidifier

If your home has a forced-air heating system, you’ll find that your indoor air may become uncomfortably dry. A humidifier will help you breathe easier by replacing that lost moisture.

3. New Filters

A dirty filter reduces the efficiency of your furnace by blocking air flow and may lead to other maintenance problems. Please get a new filter at the start of the heating season, and don’t forget to clean or replace it monthly to maintain peak performance levels.

4. Check Your Thermostat

Without a properly functioning thermostat, your home’s heating system won’t maintain a consistent temperature. Consider upgrading to a programmable thermostat that can turn the heat off while you’re away and turn it back on when you get home.

5. Upgrade Your Insulation

The heat your home loses through its walls and roof greatly impacts your utility costs throughout the winter. If your home has insufficient insulation, get more before the winter chill sets in.

6. Replace Weather Stripping

In addition to its walls and roof, your home loses heat through doors and windows. Weatherstripping around those areas helps keep warm and cold air out. Be sure to replace any loose or frayed stripping to maximize heating efficiency.

7. Clear Blockages

Even a great furnace can’t efficiently heat your home if the ducts that distribute hot air are dirty or blocked. Ensure you remove any objects blocking the system to allow the heat to flow freely.

8. Professional Maintenance

If you’re serious about keeping your home warm throughout the winter, you’ll need a maintenance check from a trained service professional. Your technician will clear up any emerging issues and make minor calibration adjustments to maximize energy efficiency.
