Types of Ants in Texas

While there are many active ant species in Tyler, some are more commonly found in homes than others. It can be difficult for homeowners to determine which ant species they’re dealing with. Additionally, termites can easily be mistaken for ants and vice versa, which is why it’s beneficial to get the help of an expert.

While we offer pest control for every type of ant you may be dealing with, we most commonly treat for the following types of ants:

Crazy Ants

These ants get their name because they don’t move in a straight line, but rather move in a frantic zig-zag pattern. Crazy ants, also known as Rasberry crazy ants or Tawny crazy ants, love sugar. Unfortunately, these pests have become a prevalent pest issue in the Tyler area. You can identify these ants by their hairy bodies and their reddish-brown color.

Fire Ants

Fire ants are also reddish-brown and are known for their painful sting. These pests build unsightly mounds outside that are usually easy to spot. However, it is still common for a child, adult or pet to accidentally stumble upon a fire ant mound, leading to a painful situation. The ant control experts at ABAC typically recommend an application of baits and treatment products applied to each mound to get the best results.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are typically large and can range in color from black, brown or a combination of black and reddish-orange. These ants are nocturnal and can bite. Carpenter ants don’t eat wood, like termites do. Instead, they chew through wood to create large nests inside of our homes. The signs of a carpenter ant infestation and a termite infestation are similar, so it is best to contact a pest control professional.

Prevention

Customers with our ongoing pest management services will receive periodic retreatments to prevent the return of the most common pests in our area.

After your ant treatments, we ask that you avoid using strong cleaners near any bait stations. The odor of strong cleaning products can interfere with an ant’s ability to follow pheromone trails. These trails are important because they signal to other ants that there’s food close by. Depending on the severity of the ant problem, we may suggest applying treatments to the nest as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon can you get started?

We understand if you’re at your wits’ end with ants. Call us or schedule an inspection online and we will put you on our calendar as soon as possible.

Can’t I just get rid of ants on my own?

Technically, there are products that homeowners can purchase to treat for ants. Unfortunately, many of these products only treat for the ants that you do see, and don’t do anything about the ants that are in the nest. Effective ant control requires treating the nest, and nests are typically built outside with an extensive underground tunnel system.

Ant control is made even more difficult because some ant queens are able to lay hundreds to thousands of eggs on a daily basis. Also, ant control products are not one-size-fits-all. Most bait products homeowners can buy are targeted at ants that prefer sugar, and many species of ants prefer salty foods or protein. If you don’t purchase the correct product, it will not be effective.

What impact do your products have on my family and the environment?

ABC is a family-owned business that has operated for generations and one of our values is that we always treat our customers’ homes as if they were our own. We research products before we choose them and we only select treatments that we would comfortably use around our own families and homes. Also, we only use products that are formulated for residential use and we take care to use our products in the lowest concentrations possible.

Does ABC offer a warranty?

ABC is happy to offer our ABC Guarantee for our customers who are signed up for quarterly or ongoing pest prevention plans. We will come re-service your property between service dates, if needed.
