Caught Between a Web and a Hard Place

spiderweb_istockIf you have long been afraid of spiders, you will likely look for signs of infestations during all seasons of the year. Arachnids, however, are savvy creatures and can often begin building nests in out-of-the-way locations. Before you’ve had time to respond, you’ll be dealing with an infestation that can be very tough to eradicate. By checking for spiders in hidden areas, you can ensure that your house remains free of pests (and keep your anxiety from exploding into full-blown arachnophobia).

Furniture Items

Though spiders most commonly spin webs in the rafters, a rarely moved piece of furniture may also make a lovely home. Couches or chairs that have remained in one place for several weeks should be closely examined. In nearly all instances, the critters will be found on the underside of the upholstery.

Sinks

Sinks are perfect havens for spiders that are looking to breed. The cabinet areas underneath sinks usually feature water, food, and plenty of privacy. Be sure to check along the entire length of the sink. If you ca unable to peer all the way to the back of the cabinet, use a good flashlight. Large webs will usually indicate an advanced infestation.

Storage Boxes

Most homeowners have boxes of old books and clothes that have remained safely ensconced in the bedroom closet for years. If you have a huge walk-in closet, the area near the back wall may be home to various critters. Perform regular cleanings so that you can clear out spider infestations before they grow worse.

Decks

Don’t neglect your deck. Outdoor wood decks offer a broad array of locations for breeding spiders. Check behind exposed foundation areas and wooden beams.

Spider Prevention

Because spiders are primarily interested in chasing and eating other insects, you will want to keep your home as clean as possible. They’ll quickly move on to other buildings without other critters to prey on. To prevent spiders from entering the house in the first place, you can efficiently seal off weaknesses in the foundation with caulk. If you’re worried about spiders in closets, sinks, and basements, you can rigorously clean these areas every few weeks.
