To ensure the appliance is not overworking and runs as efficiently as possible:
- make sure the refrigerator coil is clean and free of dust.
- avoid stressing your refrigerator or freezer’s motor - allow adequate air flow behind the appliance by keeping at least two inches between the wall and the back of the unit.
- keep door seals free of buildup (melted popsicles, etc.).
Following these recommendations will help your refrigerator to work efficiently and prolong its working life.
Front Loading Washers: To prevent mold or mildew growth, wipe off the rubber door seals of the appliance after each use.
All Washing Machines: To prevent the chance of stagnant water & odors in your washing machine, increase air flow through the machine by leaving the washing machine door open when not in use.
For Insurance: Consider replacing the rubber water supply hoses every five years - or whatever period the machine manufacturer recommends. Insurance companies may claim water damage from a hose leak is a result of improper maintenance, and will not cover the subsequent damage.
Dryers: To help with proper functioning, make sure dryer vent hose is not kinked or bent at a severe angle. This can come from having the dryer pushed too close to the wall. Additionally, clean the lint screen regularly.
Dishwasher: To decrease the hard water build up that can shorten the working life of your dishwasher, clean the dishwasher with vinegar every 3-4 months. Put a cup of vinegar into the machine, run a normal wash cycle (with no dishes), and let the dishwasher clean itself.
Garbage Disposal: Keep odors away by periodically cleaning your disposal by just putting ice down it. Be sure and start the unit first, before putting a handful of ice into the drain. Additionally, many people also put some orange or lemon peals into it to give the disposal a fresh scent.
